LEATHER
For the home leatherworker choosing the right leather is an important decision. If you want to do better than get by on off-cuts you normally have to buy whole hides. At 15 sq ft for a shoulder it becomes expensive and difficult to store especially if you want a choice of leather to work with.
A Tanner Bates Selection Pack It consists of 4 roughly rectangular smaller sections of 2 sq ft each which means you can have a variety to work with, you dont have to invest a large amount and storage is simpler.
The pack is made up of 1 black 2 shades of brown and 1 natural (undyed). The leather is good quality firm cowhide, cut from the shoulder and is between 2.5 and 3.5mm thick. There will be a selection of bridle finish (smooth and waxy) and case finish.

Belt Leather
We can offer a Selection Pack suitable for belts. It would be cut across the shoulder. A 2 sq ft section would be about 5" wide by 50" long. The thickness would be around 3.5mm.
Bridle leather
We stock oak-bark tanned leather from J & F J Baker in Colyton. This really is the best bridle leather we have come across. It takes between a year and 2 years to tan in huge pits in the ground steeping in the soft water from the River Coly which runs alongside the tannery and strips of oak bark. Its supple, strong and extremely tactile. Its also quite a bit more expensive than shoulder a 5" x 50" section would be £52.50. The Oak Bark Leather Belt is made from this same leather.

Colours mid brown, very dark brown, black. Thickness 4 - 4.5mm
