A Touch of Tradition
The
Badalassi Pueblo Italian Leather that we use is sourced from our favourite tannery in Florence. This tannery continues to use time-honoured traditions and tree barks to produce some of the most beautiful leather in the world.
At first glance, this leather took our breath away at the Milan trade show. Its rich texture and deep patina that develops over time make it truly one-of-a-kind. The more you use it, the more it becomes a part of you.

How It's Made
The creation of the Dartington Leather Bookmark is a meticulous process. Using full-grain leather hides, we selectively cut the pieces out using a press knife and our clicker press. This process ensures each is the same size. The tassels are cut by hand with a strap cutter to form long lenghts then tied to the bookmark individually and cut to length.
The bookmarks are then embossed with our makers marque using a hot press to stamp the brass tool into the leather. The press is hand operated so it takes skill and experience to ensure a consistent and quality impression.
Lastly, each bookmark is quality-checked before it is sent out. This makes sure that you get the best product possible.

When was the first bookmark made?
History of Bookmarks
The concept of the bookmark has been around for as long as there have been books to keep one's place in. However, identifying when the very first bookmark was made is somewhat challenging due to the lack of precise historical records on such a specific topic. Nevertheless, we can infer a few things about the early use of bookmarks:
Ancient Times: It's likely that some form of bookmark was used in the earliest libraries, like those in Alexandria, to keep track of where a reader left off. These could have been simple markers such as a small piece of parchment or a strand of leather.
Medieval Period: In the medieval era, bookmarks known as "incunabula" were often used. These were usually made of leather or cloth and sometimes attached to the book itself.
Renaissance Era: The earliest existing bookmarks date to the 16th Century. These were often made of silk or embroidered fabric and were used in religious texts such as Bibles and prayer books.
It's important to note that throughout history, people have likely used various objects as temporary bookmarks, such as small pieces of fabric, leaves, or even just a slip of paper, long before any formal or widely recognised bookmark came into common use. The sophistication and design of bookmarks evolved over time, often reflecting the artistic and cultural trends of the period in which they were created.
When did bookmarks become popular?
The Popularity of Bookmarks
Bookmarks have been used since the advent of the printed book in the 15th Century. However, their popularity significantly increased as the production of books became more common and widespread. Here is a brief overview of the historical popularity of bookmarks:
15th Century: The earliest known bookmarks date back to the 15th Century, used shortly after the printing press was invented.
16th Century Onwards: As literacy rates began to increase and books became more available to the general public, the use of bookmarks became more common.
Victorian Era: During the 19th Century, particularly in the Victorian era, bookmarks became highly popular as gifts and were often made of luxurious materials such as silk or leather and adorned with embroidery, lace, or precious metals and stones.
20th Century: Bookmarks became a standard accessory for readers with the mass production of books. During this time, they also became promotional items for companies and events.
Late 20th to 21st Century: The use of bookmarks continued to evolve with the production of various designs and materials. Magnetic bookmarks, for instance, became popular due to their practicality.
Digital Era: With the rise of digital technology, virtual bookmarks have become a feature in web browsers and e-readers, allowing users to save their progress or favourite websites easily.
In summary, while bookmarks have been around for centuries, their widespread popularity coincides with the increase in book production and literacy rates over time. They remain popular today in both their physical and digital forms.
