An inspired project created by the Devon Guild of Craftsmen linking football clubs and their fans to the local trade or craft from which they take their nickname is touring the country. Fans of Sheffield and Stoke and many others will know their teams by their nicknames; the Blades or the Potters. This exhibition, brilliantly, with the hands–on assistance of local artists brings awareness to the work that has made their town famous.
Leather making and working are part of our national fabric and I am proud to be one of the few makers still employing these traditions of crafting and using the leather that we are famous for throughout the world.

Tanner Bates has a passion for supporting likeminded brands and building a community that reflect our own ethos.
Here is a shortlist of some of our favourite brands. People we do work or have worked with and brands that we as individuals support and love.
First impressions matter.
A good maker's marque, or logo should set intent, speak of who you are.
Something that's true of all our hand-made products.
But why stop there, why not make it really truly personal? Not just embossed names and initials, but with your own handwriting, drawing or designs carefully engraved! Quite literally, limitless options.
Tanner Bates are a small business of passionate makers. We love to experiment with different leathers, colour mixes and interesting designs.
Coming from traditional saddlery roots our founder, John, aspires to impeccable technique whilst admiring and gathering inspiration from the worlds luxury leather brands for their design and quality of finish.
Leather, however, is a product of nature and each skin is unique to the animal it came from. For the luxury brands this individuality presents a problem, but they have found a way to condition each skin, ironing (literally) out any irregularities and coating the surface with a pigment and/or acrylic surface to ensure each one looks exquisite..... exquisite but identical to the next one and the one after that.
For us, the high quality of making and individuality of design is a given. However being a small independent brand we are free to celebrate the uniqueness of the hides by featuring natural scars, imperfections, and irregularities of dyeing. These are natural attributes that give unique character to the final product. All of our products feature these natural irregularities making each item unique.

We are introducing: The new Thurlstone Cardholder
In the spirit of All Hallows Eve, dim the lights, lock the doors and prepare yourself for the legend of The Wisht Hounds – A suitably ghoulish tale from Wistman’s Woods in the depths of Dartmoor.
It is so important to preserve the world’s precious resources. At Tanner Bates we’re passionate about sustainability. For us, this means carefully sourcing our materials, crafting products that last a lifetime and lovingly repairing, reusing or repurposing wherever possible.
Perhaps you know that one of our favourite and very special leathers we use here at Tanner Bates is our Russia Kip Calfskin Leather produced at our local tannery in East Devon. It has a fantastic story behind it - which you may already know. However for those of you who don’t, we’d love to share this with you.
